It’s showtime. On January 5, awards season kicked into high gear with the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards. The show returned to its natural habitat of the Beverly Hills Hotel and brought along comedian Nikki Glaser as a first-year host. The Globes—one of the most important pre-cursor ceremonies to the Oscars in March—honors achievements in both film and television, meaning that names from the year’s buzziest big and small screen projects got all dolled up for the event.
On the film side, Emilia Pérez was the most awarded film of the Globes with wins for director Jacques Audiard and supporting actress Zoe Saldaña. The evening’s main acting categories, aside from a tearful win for Oscar front-runner Adrien Brody, was where the real surprises came. Sebastian Stan won in the Actor, Comedy or Musical category for A Different Man, beating out the likes of Jesse Eisenberg and Glen Powell, while Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres snagged the Best Actress, Drama trophy for I’m Still Here in a crowded race that included Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman. A few moments prior, Demi Moore won her first-ever acting award for her turn in the body horror The Substance. “30 years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress,” Moore said on stage. “And at that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have.”
In television, Shōgun, Baby Reindeer, and Hacks were among the biggest winners of the evening. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who were also nominated in lead and supporting actress categories, joined Wicked director Jon M. Chu to accept the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award—ensuring that the Globes held some space for the year’s biggest blockbuster. But, before any golden statuettes were doled out, the likes of Zendaya (who sparked engagement rumors with a giant rock on her finger), Ayo Edebiri, and Selena Gomez all showed off their finest and fanciest step and repeat fashion.
