The historic Blue Heron Farm, which served as a go-to Marthaâs Vineyard getaway for former President Barack Obama and his family, has hit the market for $39 million. The Chilmark, Massachusetts, beach house, situated on 30 sprawling acres, was built in 1991 by philanthropist M. Anthony Fisher. It was sold in 2005 to Mississippians Mollie and William Van Devender, who reportedly rented the oceanfront estate out to the Obamas for their summer stays. The family stayed at the retreat for trips between 2009 and 2011 for $50,000 a week, per the Wall Street Journal. Then-President Obama reportedly sometimes used the vacation compound to conduct official meetings, which included addressing the nation about Hurricane Irene and issuing press statements following the death of Senator Ted Kennedy.
British architect Norman Foster acquired the estate in 2011 for $22.4 million. Foster, who founded Foster + Partnersâthe award-winning design firm behind landmarks like Londonâs Gherkin and Wembley Stadiumâsignificantly updated the dwelling with an eye toward modern New England sensibilities during his residency.
