The best sheets, overall

A breezy linen set

Brooklinen Linen Core Sheet Set

  • Thread count: N/A
  • Material: Linen
  • Colors available: White, cream, petal, haze, charcoal chambray, and white stripe
  • Warranty information: Brooklinen offers its customers warranty coverage on all its products, as well as a 365-day return policy (a return fee of $9.95 will be deducted from your refund amount and final sale items excluded from returns). Defective sheet sets can be replaced or refunded if a claim is filed (within two years of ownership). Damaged or defective items will not be replaced or refunded after the two-year mark (Brooklinen refers customers to their care guide to extend the life of items).

“Long side” and “short side” labeling on the fitted sheet for easy use, supersoft material, temperature-regulating design

Duvet cover runs a bit big, slightly thin sheet design

Machine-wash on a cold setting with like colors. Do not bleach and tumble dry on a low setting. You can iron these sheets on low, if necessary.

Sheets reviewer: Madeleine Luckel, contributor

What attracted you to these sheets? Back when linen was all the rage a couple years ago, I had a vision of a perfectly wrinkled dove gray set, even though I’m usually much more of a white bedding person. Brooklinen was one of two brands I knew who were making the type of linen sheets I wanted.

What’s it like sleeping on them? It’s really nice. When I got these I thought white linen sheets year-round might be a slightly bold move, since I don’t live my life on a Greek island, but the nature of the fiber is versatile and temperature regulating.

Did they live up to your expectations? Yes, but they are a little bit thin. I’m fine with this, but it’s just something to keep in mind if you are picturing a superdense weave.

Would you recommend these to a friend? Yes.

Classic cotton sheets

Parachute Organic Cotton Fitted Sheet

  • Thread count: N/A
  • Material: Organic cotton
  • Colors available: White, bone, willow, and dusk
  • Warranty information: Parachute’s bedding is protected under a one-year warranty from the date of purchase. The brand will replace their sheets with the same or a similar product or provide a refund at their discretion. Their warranty does not cover change in comfort preferences, products not cleaned in accordance with care label instructions, or damaged goods resulting from abuse or improper care or normal wear and tear.

Cotton sheet sets can lack the silky feel of other high-end materials; sheets sold separately

Machine-wash on a delicate cycle set on warm/cold water. Use mild laundry detergent and let the detergent dissolve in the water before loading your sheets. Tumble or air-dry.

Sheets reviewer: Rachel Fletcher, commerce director

Editor’s Note: The Organic Fitted Sheet we originally tested is no longer in stock, but the brushed cotton is a worthy alternative.

What attracted you to these sheets? I love the Parachute brand and when they said they were releasing a line of organic bedding last year, I jumped at the chance to give them a try. They’re also made in Portugal, which is known for producing excellent linens, and the factory that Parachute works with has been family-owned for generations.

What’s it like sleeping on them? It’s definitely not a silky smooth experience that you might get from a sateen weave, but it feels lovely nonetheless; it’s more of a grown-up and tucked-in kind of vibe (which is a lot to say about a set of sheets).

Did they live up to your expectations? These are clean and crisp, so there’s no stretchy action like you might expect with sheets of a lesser quality.

Would you recommend these sheets to a friend? I would. I try a lot of bedding in this line of work and, the more I do, the more I appreciate ethical and organic production (who wants to think about the chemicals they’re breathing in while they sleep?) even if the price tag is a little bit higher.

The eucalyptus pick

  • Thread count: 300
  • Material: 100% eucalyptus fiber (Oeko-Tex certified)
  • Colors available: Blush, white, light gray, dark gray, light blue, and dark blue
  • Warranty information: With its free trial, Buffy lets its customers experience bedding for seven nights before buying. (When you place your order, a temporary hold will be placed on your card to validate the payment method, the charge is completed when trial ends seven nights later.) If Buffy isn’t for you, email hello@buffy.co and the hold will be removed. All customers are also entitled to a 50-day return policy for unused products.

Machine-wash on a cold setting and tumble dry low.

Sheets reviewer: Zoë Sessums, senior digital design editor

What attracted you to these sheets? These got me interested by way of an Instagram ad. I was intrigued by the material—what does eucalyptus feel like?—and excited about the plant-dyed color options (they use ingredients like turmeric, gardenia, and pomegranate for the natural dying process).

What’s it like sleeping on them? These are smoooooth and feel like a silk/cotton combo. The cool-to-the-touch nature of the material is ideal for warmer months and hot sleepers, so I found the experience very nice. They only get softer after each wash.

Did they live up to your expectations? I’m a fan! Not only are the sheets very lovely, but the mission of the brand is something to get behind. If you aren’t satisfied, Buffy encourages you to donate them to someone in need—and you’ll still get a refund.

Would you recommend these to a friend? Hypoallergenic, earth-friendly, naturally dyed, ultrasoft…. Would I recommend? One hundred percent!

Best sateen

Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Sheet Set

  • Thread count: 300
  • Material: Organic long-staple cotton
  • Colors available: White, natural, dune, mist, pewter, stone, sky, shore, mineral
  • Warranty information: Boll & Branch’s items are returnable within 30 days of delivery. Refunds will exclude any shipping and handling that may have been charged to buyers.

Machine-wash in cold water with similar colors on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry on medium heat. To avoid wrinkles, shake the sheets out between washing and drying and make sure the dryer isn’t overloaded so there’s room for the sheets to move around. The sheets are not preshrunk, so you may notice a tiny bit of shrinkage after a few washes.

Sheets reviewer: Rachel Fletcher, commerce director

What attracted you to these sheets? I was sold on the fact that Boll & Branch makes organic and fair trade sheets—and I love a sateen weave. Plus, the brand markets these as their best-selling set around, so I wanted to see what the hype was about.

What’s it like sleeping on them? Boll & Branch claims that these cotton sateen sheets are buttery soft, and I definitely agree. That extra-soft feel paired with the lovely, cooling properties make them feel like the luxury sheets that they are.

Did they live up to your expectations? Definitely. I also really appreciate the earthy color palette (I chose the mineral hue), and the hem detail is a really nice visual touch.

Would you recommend these to a friend? One hundred percent. They really are some of the softest sheets I’ve ever tried—but they’re definitely on the pricier end, so I’d caveat with that.

For hot sleepers

Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set

  • Thread Count: N/A
  • Material: 100% premium viscose from bamboo fabric
  • Colors available: Light gray, white, oat, driftwood, charcoal, navy, olive, sage, harbor mist, clay, stone, walnut, pacific blue, creme, and shore
  • Warranty information: Cozy Earth’s bedding and bath products include a 10-year warranty against pilling, abnormal rips and tears, and defects. Their warranty does not include normal wear and tear or discoloration. (We Made Too Much items, discontinued products, and reshipped orders are excluded from warranty claims.)

Ultra quality and luxurious fabric that feel like a dream to slip into at night

Errs on the side of being a bit too big

Cozy Earth advises to machine wash cold without fabric softeners or bleach and to tumble dry. They also recommend using a gentle detergent. Personally, I just put mine in the washer and dryer and ran them like I normally would and it was totally fine.

Sheets reviewer: Megan Wahn, contributor

What attracted you to these sheets? As the name implies, Cozy Earth has a reputation for making bedding that feels like a warm hug. I was first introduced to the brand by way of their pajamas—which are a nightly staple for me in winter. Something about how the Cozy Earth sheets effortlessly unravelled as I took them out of their wrapping made me think, Hmmm, maybe I should give these a shot?

How do they fit your bed? The fitted sheet is snug enough, but I have noticed the top sheet runs a little large and loose and requires some tucking between my mattress and my bed frame to ensure nothing drags on the floor. The slightly larger size applies to the pillowcases too. There’s a section of extra fabric that drapes off my pillows.

What’s it like sleeping on them? I honestly thought these were silk when I first laid on them. That’s how smooth they feel. Combined with Cozy Earth’s long-sleeve pajamas, I truly feel like I’m Eloise at The Plaza whenever I slip in between these sheets. I tested them primarily in the winter and they kept me warm, though something about their smoothness makes me think the summer night sweats won’t stand a chance.

Did they live up to your expectations? Compared to the Big Blanket Co. sheets that are my regular mainstays, these Cozy Earth bamboo sheets have set a whole new bar. They’re silky smooth but maintain a comfy coziness distinct to cotton sheets.

Would you recommend these to a friend? These are definitely a bit of a splurge that some might balk at. That said, if you’re moving or just generally looking to graduate from the average department store set, Cozy Earth’s a brand to know. With some sheets, it’s hard to feel a noticeable difference in material quality but that’s not the case with these bamboo sheets.

A percale patterned set

Petite Plume Luxe Premium Cotton Bed Sheets

  • Material: 100% long-staple cotton
  • Colors available: Timeless toile, sweethearts, la mer
  • Warranty information: Returns are accepted within 14 days of shipping.

Classic design; durable material; crisp, hotel-like bedding

The toile only comes in one color

Recommended wash in cold water on gentle cycle

Sheets Reviewer: Nashia Baker, senior commerce editor

What attracted you to these sheets? I usually stick with sheets in solid colors, but the toile print caught my eye and embodied an elegant aesthetic I wanted to try for my sleep setup. The botanical print is like something out of a painting and has shown no signs of fading. Between humid days and cold nights, Baker adds that the fabric is smooth to the touch and keeps her comfortable amid the ever-changing New York City weather.

How do they fit your bed? From the top and fitted sheets to the matching pillowcases, the bedding fits snugly on my queen-size mattress and pillows. The pockets aren’t too deep, which I actually think is nice so there’s not extra fabric hanging off my bed.

What’s it like sleeping on them? I feel like I’m sleeping in a hotel thanks to this bedding’s crisp and breathable feel. Plus, it’s smooth and wrinkle resistant to give my bedroom a refined look. I’ve used these during the transitional period in NYC between winter and spring, and I can pleasantly say I’ve felt comfortable no matter the weather.

Did they live up to your expectations? Yes! I’ve been especially impressed by the durability. The printed sheets haven’t faded after countless washes, and the material itself has only felt softer with time. I haven’t spotted frayed threads, either.

Would you recommend these to a friend? Yes. I would recommend these quality sheets to anyone who likes more of a traditional bedroom style because of the classic toile design.

Other linen sheets we love

Linen is a fantastic material to sleep on. Why? It’s naturally bacteria-resistant, ventilating, moisture-absorbing, and hypo-allergenic. Linen is especially great for hot sleepers, as the sheets breathe easily and will keep you cool through the worst that a summer heat wave has to throw your way. Despite being such a light and airy material, certain variations can also be thick and hardy for cooler weather as well. And even though linen tends to wrinkle for that gently lived-in look, we consider that part of the charm. There are plenty of affordable options on the market as well, so you don’t have to lump these in the steep investment category.

Parachute Heirloom TENCEL Linen Sheet Set

  • Material: Tencel lyocell and linen blend
  • Colors available: White, bone, sage, and clover
  • Warranty information: Parachute’s bedding is protected under a one-year warranty from the date of purchase. Parachute will replace their sheets with the same or a similar product or provide a refund at their discretion. Their warranty does not cover change in comfort preferences, products not cleaned in accordance with care label instructions, or damaged goods resulting from abuse or improper care, or normal wear and tear.

Sheets reviewer: Nashia Baker, senior commerce editor

What attracted you to these sheets? I’ve historically always shopped for cooling sheets like silky bamboo—no matter the season. But after experiencing one too many cold New York City winters, I thought I’d branch out to a set that felt cozy to the touch. After visiting their brick-and-mortar, I got a chance to feel Parachute’s Heirloom Tencel Linen Sheet Set firsthand and immediately felt drawn to their soft and breathable feel. I have these in the clover hue, but Parachute offers other neutral and soothing colorways to match your bedroom vibe.

What’s it like sleeping on them? I feel warm and cozy every time I curl up in this bedding. I worried at first that I’d overheat, but they have an airiness to them that keeps me comfortable throughout the night. Unlike my crisp sets, these have a relaxed look that I love. After several trips through the washer and dryer, I’ve been really impressed by their durability. I haven’t noticed any color fading or frayed threads over the last year. I definitely recommend keeping these in rotation for all sleepers who like a plush bedding setup.

Quince European Linen Sheet Set

  • Material: 100% European flax
  • Colors available: White, light gray, terra-cotta, charcoal, sand, washed olive, tobacco, desert sunset, mist, indigo blue, sage, soft blush, bordeaux, natural/white, mist/white, terra-cotta/white
  • Warranty information: Quince shoppers enjoy a 365-day return policy and are eligible for one free return per order (with $15 deducted from your refund for each subsequent return).

Sheets reviewer: Erika Owen, contributor

What attracted you to these sheets? I love a color theme, especially in my bedroom. I went with the sage, which is subtle enough to match with everything. I am always a fan of linen sheets, as they’re naturally breathable and moisture-wicking and I’ll keep them on the bed year-round. I also love that Quince sheets are free of harmful characters and toxins (plus, their loungewear is a total dream).

What’s it like sleeping on them? They always seem to be cool, which is a feat in our apartment, where the temperature varies wildly. I loved the lived-in, wrinkled look that they pick up after a sleep or two. These also feel like they’ll hold up for years to come.

Coyuchi Organic Relaxed Linen Sheet Set

  • Material: 100% linen
  • Colors available: Redwood, harbor blue, laurel, alpine white, natural chambray, fog, slate
  • Warranty information: Coyuchi allows shoppers to return any item within 30 days for a full merchandise refund or return within 180 days of purchase for store credit equal to the original value of the item(s), even if it’s been washed or worn. If you received any free items with your order, those will also need to be returned.

Sheets reviewer: Sam Cochran, global features director

What attracted you to these sheets? Nowadays linen sheets make regular appearances in the pages of AD, as they’ve become the bedding of choice for the likes of star stylist Colin King. Maybe it’s because I can be a bit lazy when it comes to making the bed, but I have always been drawn to their relaxed, rumpled look. No military-style tight tucks in my boudoir, thank you.

What’s it like sleeping on them? Linen sheets always take some breaking in. I washed mine twice to loosen up the texture and soften the weave, helping the fabric to realize its drapey potential. They’re still a touch stiff on account of the heavy, quality linen, but as with all linen sheets they need some tossing and turning to get them into ideal condition. Give ’em another week of slumber, I think, and they’ll be just dreamy.

Other percale and cotton sheets we love

Crisp and smooth, percale is a great option for hot sleepers. Thread counts often exceed 200, resulting in a tight weave that gives the sheets a sturdier feel. Despite the added heft, they’re still incredibly breathable and moisture-wicking. Woven in a cross-cross pattern, percale sets are made from high-quality or long-staple cotton. Percale sheets are sometimes made with cotton mixed with other materials like silk or rayon, which give them a silkier feel. One of the other perks of percale is that this material pills less than others.

Matouk Egyptian Cotton Sheeting

  • Thread count: 500
  • Material: Egyptian cotton percale (Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified)
  • Colors available: Honey, truffle, red, white, charcoal, silver, baltic, pool, azure, hazy blue, bone/white, silver/white, and pool/white
  • Warranty information: While monogrammed Matouk items and other custom pieces are final sale, you can return unused, unwashed items in their original packaging within 30 days.

Sheets reviewer: Allie Weiss, US digital director

What attracted you to these sheets? I’ve long heard the name Matouk mentioned in conversations about cream of the crop bedding, and I was eager to try it myself! The Bergamo style appealed to me for its simplicity in appearance—no frills, just a simple satin stitch that would work on nearly every style bed. The brand promises this high-end percale to be silky and light, two descriptors that I’m sure pretty much everyone would want to associate with their sheets.

What’s it like sleeping on them? I barely noticed them—and I mean that in the best way! I hate scratchy sheets and breathed a sigh of relief when I slipped into these. They are both lightweight, crisp looking, and soft to the touch—talk about a win-win.

Other cooling sheets we love

For some, sleeping is always a sweaty activity—no matter the season. For self-identified hot sleepers, beeline for sets made of materials like breathable cotton or bamboo, linen, and moisture-wicking eucalyptus fiber.

  • Thread count: 300
  • Material: 100% viscose from organic bamboo
  • Colors available: Sand, white, light gray, charcoal, nightfall, sky blue, eucalyptus, olive, terra-cotta, clay, soft blush
  • Warranty information: Quince shoppers enjoy a 365-day return policy and are eligible for one free return per order (with $15 deducted from your refund for each subsequent return).

Sheets reviewer: Nashia Baker, senior commerce editor

What attracted you to these sheets? I was already familiar with Quince for its luxury-meets-budget products, but I felt drawn to this bestseller in particular because of its silky appearance and all the vibrant colors available. I opted for the warm terra-cotta hue to fill my bedroom with earthy desert tones.

What’s it like sleeping on them? Breathable bedding is a must for my sleep setup, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how well I sleep through the night with the Quince bamboo bed sheet set. This set feels smooth and cool to the touch but still cozy enough to bundle up with during the winter months.

Brooklyn Bedding Deep Pocket Bamboo Cotton Sheets

  • Thread count: 300
  • Material: Bamboo cotton
  • Colors available: White, khaki, silver
  • Warranty information: Brooklyn Bedding honors a one-year warranty for sheet defects. Items are also eligible for an exchange or refund within 30 days from the date of delivery. Note: Clearance items are final sale.

Sheets reviewer: Terri Williams, contributor

What attracted you to these sheets? I wanted some breathable bamboo sheets, since bamboo is a sustainable material. Also, I hate scratchy bedding, so I wanted some that were soft and comfortable. These also needed to have deep pockets, since I have a higher profile mattress. I also like a variety of neutral color choices. The sheets checked all of those boxes.

What’s it like sleeping on them? It’s an enjoyable experience. Bamboo cotton is so soft, and it’s also moisture-wicking, so I stay cool throughout the night. The sheets also stay in place, so I never have to worry about them sliding up the sides of the mattress. Even after weekly washings, these have retained their color and crispness and look as good as they did on day one.

  • Thread count: N/A
  • Material: 100% Tencel lyocell
  • Colors available: Fog, forest, snow, dove, sky, pebble, blush
  • Warranty information: Should you receive a damaged product, Sijo encourages customers to send a photo to care@sijohome.com along with your order number. Regular items are eligible for returns up to 60 days after purchase. Products must be in new, unused, condition with all tags attached and original packaging included.

Sheets reviewer: Rachel Fletcher, commerce director

What attracted you to these sheets? Being a hotter sleeper, I wanted to try a eucalyptus set of sheets—this eco-friendly Tencel lyocell blend from Sijo fit the bill! The sustainability and breathability of the fabric really stood out to me.

What’s it like sleeping on them? These sheets have an almost liquid, viscose kind of feel. Like slippery but in a nice and cooling way versus an “I’m going to slide off this bed” kind of a way. It’s kind of like sleeping on a perfectly worn in vintage T-shirt that also keeps you from getting sweaty. They don’t cling to every corner and have a satiny shine.

Other sateen sheets we love

Sateen distinguishes the weave and finish of the sheets, not the material (they’re still cotton after all). Made of a looser weave and thick yarn, sateen sheets often have a slightly silky and smooth texture. This is due to the long cotton fibers being soaked in lye, sealing the fibers and giving them added durability.

Brooklinen Luxe Starter Sheet Set

  • Thread count: 480
  • Material: 100% long-staple cotton (Oeko-Tex certified)
  • Colors available: White, cream, graphite, and windowpane
  • Warranty information: Brooklinen offers its customers warranty coverage on all its products as well as a 365-day return policy (return fee of $9.95 will be deducted from your refund amount, Last Call items excluded from returns). Defective sheet sets can be replaced or refunded if a claim is filed (within two years of ownership). Damaged or defective items will not be replaced or refunded after the two-year mark (Brooklinen refers customers to their care guide to extend the life of items).

Sheets reviewer: Rachel Fletcher, commerce director

What attracted you most to these sheets? This set is super classic, smooth, and has a crisp feel. When my dog was little, she loved to dig into my sheets so I started buying less-expensive options that I knew I wouldn’t care about if they were destroyed. Now that she’s older, I was looking to upgrade to something more adult and high-end. I also appreciate that, while they’re not organic, they’re chemical-free.

What’s it like sleeping on them? I’m a hot sleeper with sensitive skin and they’re really cool on my skin at night, which is a huge relief. I love the breathability of these sheets. They’re really smooth and not at all scratchy or harsh on my skin, like some of the less expensive options I’ve tried in the past.

Big Blanket Sateen Dream Sheets

  • Thread count: 300
  • Material: 100% cotton sateen
  • Colors available: Black, graphite, denim, navy, white, cream
  • Warranty information: Free returns and exchanges

Sheets reviewer: Megan Wahn, contributor

What attracted you to these sheets? Big Blanket Co. is especially known for their, well, big blankets, but the company also offers a selection of sateen sheets. Normally I stick with microfiber and polyester sheets, just because I’ve always liked their smooth hand-feel, but I figured it might be a good idea to try something new.

What’s it like sleeping on them? The fitted sheet has super-deep pockets, and it even comes with an extra elastic band to keep it secure. The fit of my sheets rarely poses an issue for me, but I rest a bit easier knowing the bedding is super snug on the bed. I have a full mattress and Big Blanket Co’s smallest size is a queen, so the sheets were a tad on the large side but that’s to be expected. It didn’t feel obscenely large, but it certainly wasn’t tight.

I’m used to sleeping on polyester sheets, so I was a little caught off guard with the material of the performance sheet set. At first I thought they felt a little reminiscent of sleeping in a hotel bed—comfy but a bit scratchy and stiff. I stuck with it for another few weeks to get used to it. It wasn’t until one night, as I languished in bed at the end of a long day, twisting my legs in my sheets, that I realized how nice they feel. They’re very smooth, and I honestly get pretty disappointed whenever I have to change them out for a wash.

How we tested

At AD, we don’t test sheets in a lab or scientific vacuum—we test them in our very own homes. Why? Because that’s where you’ll be using them too. Each of the sets in our Sleep Week roundups has been washed, dried, and slept on for countless nights by our editors and writers to ensure that we’ve put them through the ringer of everyday life. The sets are selected to reflect a variety of price points, materials, and styles and we pride ourselves in giving each set first-hand, real world use. Here’s a few of the questions we asked our testers.
